PHARR COMMUNITY THEATER OFFERS NEW PLAY

The Community Theater production of  Una Huelga Singularia by Jose Manuel Alvarez, presented by the Pharr Literacy Project and Cultural Arts Center, offers a new opportunity to see live theater for the Rio Grande Valley. Eleven performances will be offered November and December 2010, four of which will occur in specialized settings combined with mental health counseling or discussion groups afterward.

This play centers around the fictional character TERESA PACHECO a homemaker, wife and mother of two. With a full household including her father, mother & mother-in-law she has a lot of chores. The problem is that nobody helps her, instead her verbally abusive husband is setting the example while her whole family tries to follow his suit. This treatment as harsh as it's portrayed, laced with humor, comes to an abrupt end with the first act as TERESA decides to no longer tolerate the abuse and begins a strike in her own home. She will no longer do any house chores at all unless things change and the household responsibilities are equally divided and that mutual respect is restored. The pain and humiliation she endures becomes obvious and the second act begins to open everyone's eyes (including the audience) who are eager to see the outcome. Many in the audience come to relate to the story and some search for ways to better their own lives at home, in their spousal and family relationships.

The play will open up discussions about better treatment and the equality of women in the household  Some men will change their lives, especially if they see a reflection of their behavior in the antagonist fictional character, RAFAEL PACHECO, the abusive husband.
