What is the Pharr Literacy Project?

The Pharr Literacy Project (PLP) is a grassroots, faith based, community-driven program that is dedicated to providing literacy alternatives to those persons who, due to life circumstances, may otherwise find adult education an unrealistic goal.  Many of lives of the persons whom we serve have been marginalized by poverty, discrimination, and self-defeating personal decisions.  We offer free classes in 11 different sites in 3 cluster areas; Language Acquisition (English as a Second Language (ESL) and Spanish),

General Education Development (GED), and Employability Skills Training (in cooperation with Texas Workforce Solutions).  We also have a cluster of support services including child care for preschool children of our students during classes, a parenting support group, and referral services to other organizations and agencies who address issues that we are not equipped to provide, such as mental health, substance abuse, and family counseling.  Our goal is to identify the root causes of poverty and to apply systemic solutions to them in order to provide opportunities for residents of Pharr and its surrounding area to become self sufficient.
